The Pressure of Finding Your Passion

Pursuing Passion

“Pursue your passion”

This is the most overwhelming and stressful advice that I’ve ever heard of in my life.

Because to be honest, I don’t know what my passion is.

All I know is that I want to do and explore different kinds of things. But in this world where “doing your passion” is seen as the best way to live, I felt that I was not qualified.

Before, I had the notion that when someone reached 20, he/she should have been able to determine what he/she wants to do with his/her life.

But when I turned 20, I still don’t know what to do. At that time, I felt lost and discouraged.

There was also a point where I’m jealous of the people who already figured out what they want.

It was not the best place to be but because of what happened, I became interested with resources that deals with  mindset and self-help.

That’s when I realized that there might be a lot of people who’s been stressing about finding their passion as well.

So I want to share this talk that really opened my mind and heart to accepting the fact that  not knowing your passion right away is not the end of the world. It might be the beginning of something exciting.

"Don't Chase Your Passion And Maybe You'll Find It"

This is the title of a talk by Elizabeth Gilbert, author of best-selling books such as Eat,Pray, and Love and Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear from Oprah’s Supersoul Session (click here to watch the full video, I swear you’ll not regret it)

In this clip, Elizabeth Gilbert said that there are two kinds of people in the world:

The Jackhammers and the Hummingbirds.

The Jackhammers are the ones who got their passion figured out. They know what they want to be and they are on their way there. Elizabeth Gilbert was one of them.

Then, there are hummingbirds, those people who move from one thing to another

They like trying different things and exploring different skills then combining what they learned from each one. They are creating their own complex and beautiful life by cross-pollinating.

If you are a jackhammer, I just want to say that I admire you and you are blessed because you know what your passion is. So go for it, don’t be afraid to take that step. I’m rooting for you!

But if you are a hummingbird, I just want you to know that you are not alone and that we hummingbirds, can still live a life that’s fruitful and wonderful.

Don’t be scared to follow your curiosity. Don’t be scared to be different.  We will still be able to find our passion, we just need to accept the fact that we are more of explorers. Enjoy exploring and doing different things that make us feel alive.

A simple message..

One thing that I’ve learned towards pursuing life is that we need to accept who we are, accept where we are and just move forward and keep growing. We should do the things that we think we’ll enjoy without hesitations. (Note: Considering that it will not be a threat or  harm to others)

We are not a failure just because we haven’t figured out what we want to do with our life yet. So don’t be afraid to let go of “passion” for now and follow your “curiosity.”

One of the good things that will happen when we try something that sparks our curiosity is that we learn and learning something new, is never a waste of time.

So what is it that sparks your interest lately? Whatever it is, I would love to hear it! Please feel free to share it in the comment section!

Have an amazing day and see you again!
